Property with main building and kitchen in two partitions
This house is modeled after a private house at Naon in Yamato Village, Kagoshima Prefecture. Characteristically, the private houses on the Amami Islands consist of a main building and a kitchen. Primarily, the main building had a front room, called omote, and a back room, called uchi, located side by side. Later the total number of rooms became three, with a partition introduced in the back room. The front room was for receiving guests and the back room was for sleeping. The kitchen, called togura, is an annex connected to the main building by a 1.8m-wide passage, called watari. Although people cooked and ate there, the kitchen did not usually have an earthen floor.
