  • A group of granaries called 'Burigura'

This type is seen on the Amami Islands (excepting Yoron Island) and on the Tokara Islands. Unlike Okinawan types, the roof is very steep, with the side walls stretching almost horizontally. The thick pillars are almost square in section rather than being round. Communal granaries were once located in groups on the outskirts of villages or near the fields, but later private granaries were built within the premises of individual houses. A group of such communal granaries were called burigura. The granaries exhibited here are modeled after those still standing at Yamato Village on the island of Amami-oshima.
