In the vicinity of an utaki is an open area, called kami asagi, where the guardian gods were summoned in order to hold ceremonies and rituals there. On northern Okinawa island, a straw-thatched ritual house in the once-common anaya style is often found in the sacred area. Unlike other houses of the same style, however, it has no floor nor wall with low eaves. It is where priestesses worshipped gods while facing the utaki at a distance, sang sacred chants, and received a treat of divine sake.
