A great deal of bamboo went into construction!
Modeled after a farmhouse that is still standing on Yonaguni Island, this house is of a structure once familiar in Okinawa. The premises contain a main building (da), kitchen (chumiya), stable, pigsty, goat pen and hen house. Sided by a small vegetable garden (atai), the house exemplifies a typical farmhouse on Yonaguni. Bamboo is especially important as a building material, primarily for roofing, but also commonly used to build walls, floors and to frame attics. Also characterizing this house is the stable, which is smaller in size compared to those in other areas due to the smaller body of the indigenous horse on Yonaguni.
