Bochoji, or Psychotria rubra is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows on the forest floors of non-limestone formations in mountainous areas, its habitat extending from Yakushima Island in the north to the Okinawa islands and Nishiomotejima Island, as well as Taiwan and southern China. Nagami-bochoji, or Psychotria manillensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows in limestone formations in mountains or on forest floors along the coasts. It is found in a wide range of areas from the Tokara islands in the north and throughout the Ryukyu islands, extending to Taiwan and the Philippines. The flowers of these two species are white and bloom from March through July. The fruit becomes ripe between November and December.

Susuki, or Miscanthus sinensis (Japanese silver grass) is a perennial grass that grows over low-lying lands or on mountain fields where there is plenty of sunlight. It is commonly found in a broad range of areas extending from Minami-Karafuto in the north and throughout mainland Japan, to regions including Russia, North Korea, Taiwan, China, Indochina, the Philippines and Malaysia. The Okinawa-native Susuki is taller than the one from mainland Japan, and stays green over winter.
