Arboretum name: Ina: Rice
Japanese name: Ine
Species / Family: Oryza sativa L./Gramineae
Okinawan name: Nni

Rice stalks branch out at the stem, with each stalk growing to 50–90 cm in height. The tip of each stalk bears one spikelet. This panicle is the so-called ear of rice, whose stalks stand upright when producing flowers, and droop down as the grains become ripe. As rice is fundamentally an aquatic plant, paddy-field rice is common. There are, however, types of rice that are produced while floating in deep water, as well as the one called dry rice that requires little water. In wet rice agriculture, rice planting is done in paddy fields during the rainy season, and rice is harvested around October in the central regions of mainland Japan. In Okinawa, where double cropping is the norm, planting for the first crop is done in February and the harvesting done in July. For the second crop, planting is done in July and the harvesting in November.
