Plant Characteristics

Kunenbo, or Citrus Tachibana Tanaka is an evergreen tree growing to around 6 meters tall. The fruit ripens around December or January, growing to about 7 cm in length and 9 cm in diameter. It is a closely-related species of Unshu-mikan (known as Satsuma oranges). Native to Thailand and Indonesia, it is now cultivated in areas including southern China and southern Japan. It is believed to have been introduced to Okinawa from southern China, and then to southern Japan through Kagoshima. Despite its physical resemblance to Citrus depressa, it can be distinguished by its petioles wings and large fruit. In the Okinawan dialect, it is known as Toukunibu, meaning “an orange that came from China (Tang as pronounced Tou in Japanese).”

Song Lyrics

The kunefu of Shimajiri
The kunefu of our great land
How eagerly we await their fruit!
When the spring season is upon us
When hints of early summer are in the air
How eagerly we await their fruit!
