Arboretum name: Matsu: Ryukyu Pine
Japanese name: Ryukyu-matsu
Species / Family: Pinus luchuensis Mayr/Pinaceae
Okinawan name: Māchi, Machi

Ryukyu Matsu, or Ryukyu Pine is a coniferous, evergreen tree found on coastal lowlands as well as in mountainous areas, growing to a height of up to 25 meters. They exist as either secondary or pioneer plants. Peculiar to the Ryukyu islands, the Ryukyu Pine is found on almost all islands extending from the Tokara islands in the north to Yonaguni Island in the south, except for Daito Island. This plant is monoecious, and its bark is similar to that of the Japanese Black Pine. The twin-leaved fascicles are shaped like umbrellas when past maturity. Because of its resistance to wind, tidewater, and drought, and its stunning appearance, the Ryukyu Pine is widely used in local cities in an effort to create greener cityscapes. The Ryukyu Pine was designated as Okinawa’s prefectural tree in 1972.
