Plant Characteristics

Ryukyu Chiku, or Pleioblastus linearis (Linear Bamboo) is peculiar to the Ryukyu islands, growing across the islands of Okinawa (except Daito). Growing naturally along mountain ridges and by cliff edges, it is particularly found at the top and on the northern slopes of Mt. Omoto on Ishigaki Island, Mt. Furumi, and Mt. Goza on Nishi-omote Island. The height of the culms (the hollow stems) and the width of the leaves vary depending on the habitat. The flowers usually bloom concurrently in a certain region, but the blooming cycle remains uncertain. Besides the Ryukyu Chiku, about 40 species exist as cultivated varieties in Okinawa prefecture alone. This particular species was registered as Okinawa’s state bamboo in 1965 by the Bamboo Association of Japan.
