Tropical Dream Center filled with orchids
Okinawa International Orchid Show is the oldest international orchid show in Japan and counts 25th anniversary this year. Prime Minister Award is given to the grand champion, the best orchid of the show chosen from 10,000 entries, as well as various minister awards to the most superior piece of each judging category. With this year’s theme “Decorated Life with Orchids,” Tropical Dream Center presents art of orchids centering around three large orchid greenhouses, which will be filled with orchid entries from the region and beyond.
An entry from Okinawa won Grand Champion 2010
Total number of entries from last year was 16,788. Many of colorful Ascocenda and Vanda could be found in the entries from Southeast Asia while numbers of Paphiopedilum and Cattleya were seen in the entries from Japan. Of all the entries, Mr. Shikichi Arakaki’s Angrecum won grand champion. It has been 14 years since an entry from Okinawa to win grand champion. Harmonious beauty of 120 flowers was breathtaking and wowed the overseas judges as well.

There are many ways for you to enjoy Okinawa International Orchid Show 2011. Various events are happening daily during the show for people of all ages to enjoy and learn more about orchids. All the events are free of charge (only with entrance fee) to participate. So bring your family and friends, and explore the world of orchids!

My lovely orchid ~the exhibition by children~

Phalaenopsis taken care by 6 grade students in Higashi and Ogimi village are exhibited together with their observation diary. Students have learned about orchids through the experience of growing their own plants instructed by staffs of the Ocean Expo Park.
